At First Step School in San Marcos, TX
we offer dedicated attention for your child, including childcare, learning activities for infants and toddlers, Pre-school education
and summer camps. We strongly believe that your child deserves the chance to succeed. We will provide your child with infant/toddler activities, and pre-school that is both all-inclusive and personalized. Our Preschool 2 program also offers a program call Masterminds which is a Kindergarten Readiness Program.

Owner/Director: Tina Thomas-Owens
Tina Thomas-Owens is the Owner/Director of First Step School since first opening the doors for operation in August of 1995. Tina was born and raised in the San Marcos area. She is married to David Owens and has 2 daughters, Kaitlyn Wright and Konleigh Eben. She has 3 stepchildren, Matthew, Kelsey and Conner Owens. As of 2024, her oldest daughter Kaitlyn has blessed her with 3 grandchildren; Haysleigh Jo, Ryder Reed, and Kolter Lee Wright. She graduated from San Marcos High School and went on to graduate with 2 degrees from Southwest Texas State University which is now Texas State University. She has an undergraduate degree in Family and Child Development and a master's degree in Elementary Education with both an Early Childhood and Kindergarten Endorsement. She has always had a love for children, babysitting as a teen and working as a Teacher's Aide and a substitute for SMCISD while going to college. She also ran the afterschool program at Bowie Elementary, caring for the children of the teachers at the elementary school. She has total of 36+ years in working with young children. First Step School is not a job for Tina, it is a PASSION!

Our school is conveniently located for easy access to Interstate 35 and less than 5 minutes from the Outlet Mall. Above is Tina's immediate family. They are big supporters at the Hays County Livestock Youth Show. In memory of Tina's father, they support the youth by donations through The Willie Thomas Memorial Fund. Tina's Daughter, Kaitlyn Wright has a love of barrel racing. She is a member of Womens Professional Rodeo Association. The photo above was taken in Cheyenne, WO where she made the short go at the Daddy of em' all! Way to represent TEXAS!
Kaitlyn has a bachelor's degree from Texas State University in Agriculture with a specialization in Animal Science.
She has 3 children: Haysleigh Jo, Ryder Reed and Kolter Lee.
Konleigh is the youngest of Tina's daughters. She has a talent with show pigs. She exhibits excellent showman ship skills in the ring. Pictured above, this was her Reserve Champion Breeder Swine at the Hays County Youth Show in Jan 2014. She also earned the honor of Intermediate Swine Showmanship. She has a bachelor's degree from Texas State University as an Agriculture major in Animal Science, worked at a local vet clinic for 6 years and now works with the exotic animals at Texas Disposal Systems.
Tina's family dogs: Gus is one the fur babies to Tina's family. He is a purebred Mini Aussie. Tina also has a purebred Toy Aussie named Newt. And the newest addition is an Aussie and Blue Healer mixed pup named Deetz.
